The Art of Piano and Pianola Tuning

Pianos and pianolas are like any other instrument. They need regular maintenance and tuning.

How often depends on where you are and what the climate is like.

Regular servicing & tuning keeps your instrument in good condition and any problems can be picked up swiftly, avoiding the cost of repairs further down the track.

We have been tuning pianos and pianolas for over 30 years.

We travel around Queensland & Northern NSW tuning, repairing and restoring clients' pianos and pianolas.

We tune them all: old or new.

The Art of Tuning

Because piano and pianola tuning involves working with vibrating musical strings, much of it can be analysed and described in scientific terms. This does not, however, mean that tuning is nothing more than an applied science. Science lays the foundations for the necessary technique, but like the artist or sculptor, the artist tuner uses technique as a tool to achieve something more than technique alone can achieve.

The tone of an instrument is immensely complex, and the final polish on the tone of any instrument - the final character of the piano or pianola - is given by the tuner, through the art of tuning.

This is not something that happens by chance. It happens as a natural result of years of experience and intimate practical knowledge of the inner acoustical world of piano tone.

The art of tuning is not about dividing commas, setting beat rates, or getting the job done inside an hour when a novice might take six hours. All that is just part of the technique. The art is bringing the piano to its characteristic optimum, and that, like the best performance, cannot be achieved from technique alone.
